Frequently Asked Questions
What is your process like?
I collect natural materials in and around the Philadelphia area. Each leaf piece starts with an actual Paulownia leaf which is cleaned and bleached, shaped and air dried for several weeks.
I use Hanji Nara paper and cellulose glue to coat the leaf. Each leaf will get four or more layers of paper and each layer adds strength to the form, a virtual exoskeleton. This work may appear to be fragile but it is actually permanent and strong.
What about the longevity of your work?
Leaves decay through exposure to the elements, insects and microorganisms. My leaves are cleaned, bleached and air dried to protect them from decay. I have leaf work in my studio that is over 30 years old.
Is your work for sale?
Individual leaves are sold freestanding or wall hanging. Prices are based on size, detail and base material. The mobiles, tableaux and installations on view are created for exhibition purposes but can be recreated as commissions.
